In 1853, Mrs. Anne Troutman, a widow, moved with her family to a point in the forks of the Charlotte Road and the Perth Church Road and with her two sons, Jacob and Sidney. They built a home which no longer stands. The place had previously been known as Hickory Crossing. Here her sons built a shop and began making wagons and carriages.

In the late 1850´s, when the railroad was being built from Charlotte to Statesville, a construction camp was established nearby by the railroad and the place became known to railroad people as "Troutman´s". Later it was to be Troutman.

The railroad actually put Troutman on the map in addition to giving it a name. A depot was built at Troutman when the railroad was completed into Statesville and the mixed trains stopped here for passengers and to load and unload freight.
